The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman

All novels are about certain minorities: the individual is a minority. Ralph Ellison. Even if Gaines dispelled any possible misconceptions about his book, 1 the strategies he chose to adopt nevertheless raise a number of questions: What is the significance of calling a work of fiction an autobiography? Finally, how do historical, autobiographical and oral strategies fuse so as to produce the multi-voiced historical novel called The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman? This clear-cut separation is made for methodological purposes only; the various influences obviously concur in the novel. The autobiographical narrative accompanied the construction of the American nation and the American self ever since colonial times. New surroundings, new circumstances —the vastness of the continent, the hostility of the Indians, the inhuman treatment of the slaves, the painful yet exhilarating process of becoming American— elicited new varieties of autobiographical writings: the captivity narrative, the slave narrative and the immigrant autobiography.

The story depicts the struggles of African Americans as seen through the eyes of the narrator, a woman named Jane Pittman. She tells of the major events of her life from the time she was a young slave girl in the American South at the end of the Civil War. The novel was dramatized in a TV movie in , starring Cicely Tyson. The novel, and its main character, are particularly notable for the breadth of time, history and stories they recall. In addition to the plethora of fictional characters who populate Jane's narrative, Jane and others make many references to historical events and figures over the close-to-a hundred years Miss Jane can recall. Jane and other characters also mention Frederick Douglass , Booker T. Corporal Brown's voice give these historical meditations a kind of "setting the record straight" mood to the storytelling presented in this novel.

Gaines s novel brings to mind other great works: The Odyssey, for the way his heroine s travels manage to summarize the American history of her race, and Huckleberry Finn, for the clarity of [Pittman s] voice, for her rare capacity to sort through the mess of years and things to find the one true story of it all. Newsweek Stunning. I know of no black novel about the South that exudes quite the same refreshing mix of wit and wrath, imagination and indignation, misery and poetry. Gaines employs a fictional speaker to tell the story of one hundred years of American history. Autobiography is a story of slavery, of freedom, of dreams deferred, of hopes both dashed and realized. It is the story of the South its history, its struggles, its opportunities, and its failures. Miss Jane Pittman, the narrator, embodies many different, seemingly opposite roles: she is both a strong, self-reliant woman and a headstrong child; she is a scared wife and a surrogate mother; she is a hesitant leader, yet also a pragmatic follower; and she is both a bold accuser and a shy accomplice.

Gaines' novel brings to mind other great works The Odyssey for the way his heroine's travels manage to summarize the American history of her race, and Huckleberry Finn for the clarity of her voice, for her rare capacity to sort through the mess of years and things to find the one true story in it all.

Gaines , published in The novel is set in rural southern Louisiana and spans years of American history—from the early s to the onset of the civil rights movement in the s—in following the life of the elderly Jane Pittman, who witnessed those years. A child at the end of the Civil War, Jane survives a massacre by former Confederate soldiers. She serves as a steadying influence for several black men who work hard to achieve dignity and economic as well as political equality. After the death of her husband, Joe Pittman, Jane becomes a committed Christian and a spiritual guide in her community. She is an aware but passive observer of the various religious and secular movements among black Americans. Spurred on by the violent death of a young community leader, Jane finally confronts a plantation owner who represents the white power structure to which she has always been subservient.

Inspired by the strong, determined character of his Aunt Augustine Jefferson, to whom the novel is dedicated, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman draws on the tradition of the slave narrative and its creative branch, the fictional autobiography. Slave narratives are essentially stories of enslavement, suffering, endurance, and escape. Most accounts remained oral, but several notable exceptions were published in the nineteenth century, especially the narratives of Frederick Douglass Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, My Life and Times, The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass. The artistry of his account continues to give depth and insight to the slave experience. These accounts speak for a group through the experience of individuals, testifying to the remarkable ingenuity of the oppressed and often drawing upon deep religious convictions.
