This paper addresses the relationship between the ego, id, and internal objects. While ego psychology views the ego as autonomous of the drives, a less well-known alternative position views the ego as constituted by the drives. Given that there are multiple drives, this position proposes that personality is constituted by multiple knowers.

These elements work together to create complex human behaviors. Each component adds its own unique contribution to personality and the three interact in ways that have a powerful influence on an individual. Each element of personality emerges at different points in life.

The id, ego, and superego are names for the three parts of the human personality which are part of Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic personality theory. According to Freud, these three parts combine to create the complex behavior of human beings. Let's look at several examples of id, ego, and superego.

The Ego and the Id

The id, ego, and super-ego are a set of three concepts in psychoanalytic theory describing distinct, interacting agents in the psychic apparatus defined in Sigmund Freud 's structural model of the psyche. The three agents are theoretical constructs that describe the activities and interactions of the mental life of a person. In the ego psychology model of the psyche, the id is the set of uncoordinated instinctual desires; the super-ego plays the critical and moralizing role; and the ego is the organized, realistic agent that mediates, between the instinctual desires of the id and the critical super-ego; [1] Freud explained that:. The functional importance of the ego is manifested in the fact that, normally, control over the approaches to motility devolves upon it. Thus, in its relation to the id, [the ego] is like a man on horseback, who has to hold in check the superior strength of the horse; with this difference, that the rider tries to do so with his own strength, while the ego uses borrowed forces.

What makes a person unique? What is per- sonality? Over the course of the last centuries those questions led scientists to conduct re- search and develop partially contrary answers.

Many of the translations were done by Strachey himself; the rest were prepared under his supervision. He is regarded as one of the most influential—and controversial—minds of the 20th century.

Examples of Id, Ego, and Superego

Perhaps Freud's single most enduring and important idea was that the human psyche personality has more than one aspect. Freud's personality theory saw the psyche structured into three parts i. These are systems, not parts of the brain, or in any way physical. According to Freud psychoanalytic theory, the id is the primitive and instinctual part of the mind that contains sexual and aggressive drives and hidden memories, the super-ego operates as a moral conscience, and the ego is the realistic part that mediates between the desires of the id and the super-ego.

Ego: Dealing With Reality

Grazie! - Aspetta!
