Behavioral sink

Calhoun to describe a collapse in behavior which can result from overcrowding. The term and concept derive from a series of over-population experiments Calhoun conducted on Norway rats between and Calhoun coined the term "behavioral sink" in his February 1, report in an article titled "Population Density and Social Pathology" in Scientific American [2] on the rat experiment. Calhoun's work became used as an animal model of societal collapse , and his study has become a touchstone of urban sociology and psychology in general. Many [female rats] were unable to carry pregnancy to full term or to survive delivery of their litters if they did. An even greater number, after successfully giving birth, fell short in their maternal functions.

Population density and social pathology.

In John B. The result was a population boom, followed by such severe psychological disruption that the animals died off to extinction. The take-home message was that crowding resulted in pathological behaviour — in rats and by extension in humans. But cultural influence can run both ways. OAI identifier: oai:eprints. Calhoun conducted a behavioral study of captive mice within a nine-square-foot enclosure at a rural facility in Poolesville, Maryland. Within the enclosure known as Universe 25, several pairs of mice bred a population, which ultimately swelled to 2, Eventually, they established social orders that created inside and outside factions, and soon mating ceased altogether. The study confirmed his grim hypothesis, based on earlier studies of the Norway rat in small settings.

The urban animal: population density and social pathology in rodents and humans. The one thing they were lacking was space, a fact that became increasingly problematic as what he liked to describe as his "rat city" and "rodent utopia" teemed with animals. Unwanted social contact occurred with increasing frequency, leading to increased stress and aggression. Following the work of the physiologist, Hans Selye, it seemed that the adrenal system offered the standard binary solution: fight or flight. Violence quickly spiralled out of control. Cannibalism and infanticide followed. Males became hypersexual, pansexual and, an increasing proportion, homosexual.

What Humans Can Learn from Calhoun's Rodent Utopia

Shcherbakova, Nadezda : Urbanization as a way of saving our planet from overpopulation. This paper explores whether biological mechanisms, induced by the overpopulation of a territory, exert essential influence on cities' growth, and whether the level of economic development of a country is significant, when biological mechanisms are in operation. To answer these questions, four hypotheses, based on the theoretical statements and empirical findings of ethology and demography, are formed. The results of regression analysis of statistical data on national level, applied to test these hypothesis, show that that biological factors should be considered as one of the determinants of cities' growth, but a complex analysis of factors of urban development is needed. The biological mechanisms of population reduction play a significant role in the least and less developed countries: with per capita GDP growth the concentration of population in big cities increases.

An overview of population density control in social mammals sets the framework for examining reproductive responses to increasing population densities.

Population Density and Social Pathology
