June 17, Be a better leader by understanding these 7 powers used to persuade and influence others. Powerful leaders are usually extremely persuasive, and can easily influence others to buy into their purpose. In general, power is connected to credibility and influence. When you're influencing people, you're capturing their hearts and moving them. In , psychologists John French and Bertram Raven developed a framework for understanding different types of power.
In her book, Lipkin writes about these specific types of power and why it's important for leaders to understand what type of power they're using.
This power happens when someone is in a higher position, giving them control over others. No matter how good of a leader you are, if you're wielding coercive power, you are leading with fear, and this won't win the respect and loyalty from your employees for long.
This power comes directly from your top-level skills and years of experience. Once you hold this knowledge, your peers will regard you as an expert. The great thing about this power is that no one can take it away from you. It's knowledge that you hold. However, in order to remain an expert and to keep your status and influence, you need to continue learning and improving. This is a short-term power that doesn't necessarily influence or build credibility. This should not be a long-term strategy.
Lipkin gives this example: "Both Diane and Bob hold a certain amount of reward power if they administer performance reviews that determine raises and bonuses for their people.
This power creates influence by proxy and is all about networking. You can attain this power by gaining favor and being a source of information for the people you connect with. That's politics in a way," Lipkin says. Diane's natural ability to forge such connections with individuals and assemble them into coalitions gives her strong connection power.
This is the most important and real power that leaders should adopt, because it's all about the quality of the relationship developed with others and how those relationships are built. People with high referent power can highly influence anyone who admires and respects them. In short, when people perceive you in a power position, they are relying on you and there's a lot you can achieve through influence.

The 5 Types of Power in Leadership
Recently, I had the opportunity to present at the Upswell conference , hosted by Independent Sector and targeted toward philanthropy, nonprofit, and other change makers. It can feel awkward or unpleasant and reveal hard truths that may feel unsurmountable. However, research tells us that just talking about power can help empower us. Based on my Upswell presentation, the remainder of this post identifies four of the ways power can show up in cross-sector and collaborative work and poses a variety of related questions for consideration. One of the most obvious ways power shows up is in resources. Of course, when we talk about resources in philanthropic and nonprofit circles, the first type that comes to mind is often money and the influence and authority attached to it. However, a famous framework by French and Raven 2 names five power-related resource types.
For example, the VP of Sales who threatens sales folks to meet their goals or get replaced. This type of power can be used to set high expectations for employee performance. This may be done through giving bonuses, raises, a promotion, extra time off from work, etc. For example, the supervisor who provides employees comp time when they meet an objective she sets for a project. This is all about positive reinforcement and can work to really incentivize people while on the job. The draw of a reward — whether big or small — can foster creativity, healthy competition, and excitement across your team. Legitimate power comes from having a position of power in an organization, such as being the boss or a key member of a leadership team.

One mostly implicit element of the classroom reality is the way that power is manifested in any class. Feeling some degree of power is a basic human need. The teacher too has a basic need for power as a human being, and they are no less inclined to react if they are not experiencing healthy means to feeling control over their destiny.
In a notable study of power conducted by social psychologists John R. French and Bertram Raven in , power is divided into five separate and distinct forms. This was followed by Raven's subsequent identification in of a sixth separate and distinct base of power: informational power. French and Raven defined social influence as a change in the belief, attitude, or behavior of a person the target of influence that results from the action of another person an influencing agent , and they defined social power as the potential for such influence, that is, the ability of the agent to bring about such a change using available resources.

How we change what others think, feel, believe and do. The most common description of power is French and Raven This divides power into five different forms. Raven added informational power, and Raven summarized the subsequent canon of work in this subject. Social influence is defined as ' change in the belief, attitude, or behavior of a person the target of influence , which results from the action of another person an influencing agent ', and social power as the potential for such influence. This is the power to force someone to do something against their will. It is often physical although other threats may be used.
Having power and using power are two different things. For example, imagine a manager who has the power to reward or punish employees. When the manager makes a request, he or she will probably be obeyed even though the manager does not actually reward the employee.
Studies of leadership styles are diverse in nature and multiple definitions have been offered. However, leadership style can be defined broadly as the manner and approach of providing direction, implementing plans, and motivating people. Bases of power refer to the methods that managers and leaders utilize to influence their employees. When examining bases of power, the concept of authority must also be considered. These two are interconnected attributes tied to the behavior of superiors over subordinates. Thus, it is erroneous to ask who has power.
