In post-independence India, the first such assassination was of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi in Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated at her official residence by her security personnel — but what prompted the assassin to pull the trigger that killed her? Was there a conspiracy?

And if so, who were involved in it is again a big question mark. RG had been the prime minister of the country for more than five years and, after the defeat of the Congress in elections and later the fall of Chander Shekhar government in March , was faist coming back as a front-runner in the race for political power. But were these the only accused? Or was there a much bigger conspiracy at the national and international level behind the assassination?

RG, unlike his brother Sanjay, was initially an unwilling entrant in the political arena of the country. As an airlines pilot he was least interested in following the footsteps of his grandfather and mother — both of whom had been key players in the political arena. Sanjay was the one who was active in the political scenario and had become a front-runner in the power game. With the death of Sanjay Gandhi in a plane crash in mid- , and at the insistence of his mother Indira Gandhi, then the prime minister and Congress president, RG reluctantly entered politics.

He contested and won the Lok Sabha by-election from Amethi which was represented by Sanjay Gandhi prior to his death in He was appointed general secretary of the Congress on 2 February, The political scenario at that time was charged with hostility and intrigue, with the Sikh militants in Punjab raising a demand for a separate state of Khalistan. This had culminated in Operation Blue Star when the army entered the Golden Temple from where Jarnail Singh Bhindranwala was masterminding the Khalistan movement that had led to a hostile confrontation between the Hindus cind the Sikhs, and had the active support of ISI from across the border backed by CIA.

Indira Gandhi did succeed in curbing the militants, but she earned the wrath of part of the Sikh community who were pro-militants and resented the intrusion of the army in the Golden Temple. As a result, she was assassintated as a serving prime minister at her official residence on 31 October, The durability of the Nehru dynasty was such that though he had been in active politics for less than four years and had held no office in the previous government, the president swore him in as the prime minister.

Later the Congress Parliamentary Party unanimously elected RG as the party leader in the Lok Sabha and he thus become the youngest and the most inexperienced prime minister that the country had ever had. Overnight RG was a changed man. Now that he had come into politics, he spoke of bringing India into the 21st century. A young and vibrant man that he was, he set about liberalising the country's economy so that Indians could exploit their talents and move forward in trade and industry.

As prime minister, RG could do no wrong — that was the general impression after he had been in office for just one year. Even the opposition that was always on its toes to find fault with the government had very little to criticise.

This, however, was not to be. A senior colleague VP Singh — who later became the prime minister — resigned from the cabinet on the ground that the government was hesitant to investigate the alleged scandals. Singh later came in open confrontation with RG, resigned from the party and formed a new political front called Jan Morcha which was later merged with Janata Dal.

RG was the first prime minister of India who had increased the defence budget twofold during his tenure. He was fast emerging as an international leader and posed a challenge to the superpower hegemony in the region. The United States had become alert to the challenge from RG.

He was a prime minister who planned his work and worked his plan, and the major political parties had little ground to oppose his policies and programmes. Terrorism and separatism was getting a lot of aid from across the borders of the country and from the super power.

RG sat on the negotiating table with sectionalist and separatist groups — with the prime aim of keeping India united. He signed accord after accord in the national interest. He signed the Punjab accord with Sant Harcharan Singh Longewal even when he knew that the accord would weaken or deplete the Congress vote bank in that state.

RG held the assembly elections in Punjab, in the autonomous body of hills in West Bengal and in Assam after signing accord with the leaders of the separatist movements. The Congress suffered defeat from the groups that had gained by signing the accord. RG was sacrificing Congress hegemony and handing over the governance of the states to the groups that had led the movements.

If RG would not have resolved the problems of Punjab, Assam and Gorkhaland of Bengal, interested foreign powers would have intervened and used the dissident groups for augmenting terrorism and damaging and dividing the country. RG faced criticism within the party on this account, but he opted for strengthening the country even at the cost of loss to the Congress vote bank, I would even like to say that RG protected the integrity of the country and buried forever the concept of separate states.

This probably was the reason why the super-power USA, who Pre-Assassination Scenario 5 then was totally pro-Pakistan, wanted to finish RG politically if not physically. Chandra Swamy CS was and is a foreign agent who not only had a great influence on the political parties but handled the CIA network in India. CIA played various games in Indian politics, and campaigns were started to finish off RG politically. Even an attempt was made to persuade the then President of India Gyani Zail Singh by offering him rupees 40 crore to dismiss the RG government.

The opposition leaders were promising Gyani Zail Singh to support him in the coming presidential election. It is my firm belief that RG was being challenged and his reputation being damaged in the public eye by the agents of powers that he wanted to get rid of. Ambitious and power- hungry leaders of the Congress and other parties were frequently meeting and discussing how RG could be removed from the presidentship of AICC and the prime ministership of the country.

Even those whom RG had trusted betrayed him. Of the few exceptions, Arjun Singh was asked by RG to leave his post of Madhya Pradesh chief minister and take over as governor of riot-torn Punjab where terrorism was at its peak. People had started to think as to what will be the future of Punjab — will it remain a part of India or will India be divided again by the creation of Khalistan with the support of ISI and CIA.

If RG failed to solve the problems of Punjab, Assam and the hilly area of West Bengal, the country was likely to face divisions in these parts. RG had urgent and immediate need for strong and trusted men who could help solve these problems. After a series of accords, RG brought Arjun Singh into the national politics. Dissidents were blaming Arjun Singh on many issues, and RG understood that the criticism of Arjun Singh was indirectly an attack on his leadership since he was the one who had brought Arjun Singh to the national fold.

Senior leaders of the Congress were issuing statements that RG was bending before regional and sectionist powers because of the wrong advice given by Arjun Singh. But RG had stuck to his ground and refused to change his policies under pressure. He went even further and, on the request of Sri Lankan government, took an active part in putting an end to fighting and bringing the Tamil Tigers and Sri Lankan government across the negotiating table to reach an accord.

This was not what the agents of some foreign powers wanted, and they started to speak against the accord. Prabhakaran opposed the accord saying that it was against the interests of Sri Lankan Tamils.

Those who blamed RG for the Punjab, Assam and Gorkha hills autonomous body accords were surprised that peace and democracy had been restored in a united India — thanks to the approach adopted by Rajiv Garidhi.

Had RG returned to power after the election of , he would certainly have succeeded in bringing permanent peace in Sri Lanka. But peace was not what the terrorists wanted and RG started to face threats from various terrorist outfits.

The opponents of RG managed to oust him from power in , but he continued to speak against terrorism and the powers behind it. He had opposed the attack on Iraq by countries led by the United States in RG had visited Iran and the erstwhile USSR and was playing an active role on behalf of the third-world countries, which perhaps was not to the liking of the superpower and other powerful countries in the international arena. The government led by Chander Shekhar was providing refuelling to the aircraft of the imperialist powers on their way to bombard Iraq.

RG had opposed this policy as the then government was running with outside Congress support. After the division of Janata Dal and fall of VP Singh government, the political scenario had become clear and the Chander Shekhar government was not expected to continue for long. Chandra Swamy, on the other hand, was predicting that Chander Shekhar would be in power for several years.

After the declaration of parliamentary elections in , the political scenario had shifted in favour of RG and the Congress. Public and political analysts had started to say that RG was coming back to head a Congress government at the centre. National and international powers that were anti-RG had been alerted and RG was assassinated by a human bomb during the election campaign in Sriperumbudur, a small town about 40 km from Chennai at hours on 21 May, Unfortunately this day happens to be my birthday.

A few days after the assassination I had come to know about the role of Chandra Swamy who had started to cover up the evidence relating to the wider conspiracy behind the assassination. According to the findings of the commission, the accusing fingers of suspicion were pointing towards Chandra Swamy and Subramanian Swamy. Government of India. I have a patriotic reason for writing this book because I feel it is high time to expose to the public at large who and what were the persons and agencies behind the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.

What I have to say in what follows will not only be of interest the Indians in India and abroad but Pre-Assassination Scenario 9 also to the people of the third world because RG was assassinated as the leader of the third world countries and a spokesman who went out of his way to highlight their problems in the international arena.

Chapter 2 Political Elimination of Rajiv Gandhi Rajiv Gandhi had entered the political field by contesting the by-election from Amethi Lok Sabha constituency in from where his younger brother Sanjay was elected earlier. He wcis also appointed genercd secretary of the Congress like his brother Sanjay. Indira Gandhi was drafting RG to lead the Congress and the country. From the outset, Rajiv was winning the faith of every youth Congress leader. She lost her life because she had dared to fight against terrorist and sectionalist forces.

The nation was sunk in grief — but one person, the godman Chandra Swamy, was busy trying to instal one of his disciples Pranab Mukherjee or PV Narasimha Rao in the seat of the prime minister of the country.

The capital was agog with anti-Sikh sentiments.

The report is not without its Indian angle. At the same time, Jain appears to have pulled his punches in recommending any further probe into the charges against these two politicians. Justice Jain has devoted separate chapters to three key Indian players who are suspected, one way or the other, to have had prior knowledge of the assassination. Nothing definitive or conclusive here, but Jain has woven in intriguing loops of circumstantial evidence—quoted and contained in the annexures—around godman Chandraswami, Janata Party leader Dr Subramanian Swamy and former PM Chandra Shekhar. The three are bracketed, prima facie, as either having a link with those who allegedly conspired with the assassins or at least having been privy to the fact of a plot.
