Theoretical and empirical research on the evolution of reproductive isolation have both indicated that the effects of sexual selection on speciation with gene flow are quite complex. As part of this special issue on the contributions of women to basic and applied evolutionary biology, I discuss my work on this question in the context of a broader assessment of the patterns of sexual selection that lead to, versus inhibit, the speciation process, as derived from theoretical research. In particular, I focus on how two factors, the geographic context of speciation and the mechanism leading to assortative mating, interact to alter the effect that sexual selection through mate choice has on speciation.

Speciation: The Origin of New Species

Douglas J. Futuyma, Gregory C. Non-allopatric speciation in animals. Special attention is given to the theory of stasipatric speciation, and to purported cases, especially in tephritid fruit flies, of sympatric speciation associated with a shift to a new host. Stasipatric speciation is unlikely under population genetic theory; moreover, chromosome rearrangements probably seldom facilitate speciation. In the tephritid genus Rhagoletis , the archetypal case of sympatric speciation, there is little or no evidence of genetic divergence or of sympatric speciation. The conditions under which host-associated sympatric speciation might occur are so exacting as to be met by very few species.

Darwin viewed evolution by natural selection as a very gradual mechanism of change within populations, and postulated that new species could be the product of this very same process, but over even longer periods of time. This eventual process of speciation by natural selection is illustrated by a sketch drawn by Darwin in his personal notebook nearly 20 years before the Origin of Species was published Figure 1. Here, he proposed a model whereby lineages form from their ancestors by evolving different characters over relatively long periods of time. Darwin indicated that species could form by the evolution of one species splitting into two, or via a population diverging from its extant ancestor to the point it was a new species. Darwin's insights into evolution were brilliant, especially in light of their being made in the absence of genetics.

Three types of genes have been proposed to promote sympatric speciation: habitat preference genes, assortative mating genes and habitat-based fitness genes. Previous computer models have analysed these genes separately or in pairs. In this paper we describe a multilocus model in which genes of all three types are considered simultaneously. Our computer simulations show that speciation occurs in complete sympatry under a broad range of conditions.

Previous computer models have analysed these genes separately or in pairs. In this paper we describe a multilocus model in which genes of all three types are considered simultaneously. Our computer simulations show that speciation occurs in complete sympatry under a broad range of conditions. The process includes an initial diversification phase during which a slight amount of divergence occurs, a quasi-equilibrium phase of stasis during which little or no detectable divergence occurs and a completion phase during which divergence is dramatic and gene flow between diverging habitat morphs is rapidly eliminated. Habitat preference genes and habitat-specific fitness genes become associated when assortative mating occurs due to habitat preference, but interbreeding between individuals adapted to different habitats occurs unless habitat preference is almost error free. Even when several loci contribute to the probability of expression of non-habitat assortative mating and the contributions of individual loci are small, gene flow between diverging portions of the population can terminate within less than generations.

Speciation can take place in two general ways. A single species may change over time into a new form that is different enough to be considered a new species. This process is known as anagenesis.

Sympatric speciation is the evolution of a new species from a surviving ancestral species while both continue to inhabit the same geographic region. In evolutionary biology and biogeography , sympatric and sympatry are terms referring to organisms whose ranges overlap so that they occur together at least in some places. If these organisms are closely related e. Sympatric speciation is one of three traditional geographic modes of speciation.

Parapatric speciation, a third form of allopatric speciation Bush ; Endler , was not considered by Lynch because it appears to be phylogenetically indistinguishable from other forms of allopatric speciation Wiley Cracraft By showing that genetic differentiation along the genome is too variable to be accounted for by a simple allopatric model, they confirm that gene flow between the diverging species must have happened, with timescales for contact on the order of years. Allopatric speciation occurs when diverging populations have become geographically separated.

Alexey S. Kondrashov, Mikhail V. Mina, Sympatric speciation: when is it possible? This paper is written to compare the results of theoretical investigations of sympatric speciation with the relevant experimental data. We understand sympatric speciation as a formation of species out of a population whose spatial structure is not important genetically.
