She is credited with advancing the genre of confessional poetry and is best known for two of her published collections, The Colossus and Other Poems and Ariel , as well as The Bell Jar , a semi-autobiographical novel published shortly before her death. Educated at Bradford Senior High School in Wellesley and Smith College, Plath became the editor of the college's Smith Review and in was awarded a position as guest editor of Mademoiselle magazine. An incident where she was left out of a meeting with her idol, Dylan Thomas, had a devastating effect on Plath and shortly thereafter she attempted suicide for the first time, by taking her mother's sleeping pills. She was admitted for psychiatric care at McClean Hospital and spent six months undergoing treatment. She returned to Smith and graduated with honours and won a Fulbright scholarship to study at Newnham College, Cambridge.
