Developmental mechanisms that canalize or compensate perturbations of organismal development targeted or compensatory growth are widely considered a prerequisite of individual health and the evolution of complex life, but little is known about the nature of these mechanisms. Here we develop a statistical model of developmental canalization based on an extended autoregressive model. We show that under certain assumptions the strength of canalization and the amount of canalized variance in a population can be estimated, or at least approximated, from longitudinal phenotypic measurements, even if the target trajectories are unobserved.

The Distinction Between Innate and Acquired Characteristics

Canalization refers to the process by which phenotypes are stabilized within species. Evolution by natural selection can proceed efficiently only when phenotypes are canalized. The existence and identity of canalizing genes have thus been an important, but controversial topic. Recent evidence has increasingly hinted that microRNAs may be involved in canalizing gene expression. Their paradoxical properties e.

Evolutionary Developmental Biology pp Cite as. Conrad Hal Waddington was a paleontologist, embryologist, geneticist, and philosopher. Nonetheless, the complexity and the multifaceted impact of his theoretical approach make it difficult to form a clear and unitary picture of his life, works, and heritage. The chapter examines his early studies in experimental embryology and his pioneering work on epigenetics, which offered new insights into the internal connections between embryology, genetics, and evolution. The chapter concludes by examining the contemporary directions of research mostly influenced by Waddington, with particular attention to contemporary epigenetics and the study of the interplay between metaphysics and science.

The idea that some characteristics of an organism are explained by the organism's intrinsic nature, whilst others reflect the influence of the environment is an ancient one.
