Modularity of mind is the notion that a mind may, at least in part, be composed of innate neural structures or mental modules which have distinct, established, and evolutionarily developed functions. However, different definitions of "module" have been proposed by different authors.

Barbauld's Hymns in Prose for Children Poetics Today 1 March ; 23 1 : — Literary critics have pointed out that the tacitly catechistic mode of Barbauld's Hymns implicates it in the eighteenth-century ideological project of socializing children, particularly those coming from working-class families, to their proper stations in life.

Jacques advised us in the preparation of the conference, and while we failed to convince him to write a paper, he did play a major role in the discussions. A main issue at stake was the degree to which cognitive development, everyday cognition, and cultural knowledge are based on dedicated domain-specific mechanisms, as opposed to a domain-general intelligence and learning capacity. Thanks in particular to the work of developmental psychologists such as Susan Carey, Rochel Gelman, Susan Gelman, Frank Keil, Alan Leslie, Jacques Mehler, Elizabeth Spelke who were all there , the issue of domain-specificity —which, of course, Noam Chomsky had been the first to raise — was becoming a central one in cognitive psychology. We were a few anthropologists, far from the mainstream of our discipline, who also saw domain-specific cognitive processes as both constraining and contributing to cultural development. Taking for granted that domain-specific dispositions are an important feature of human cognition, three questions arise:. What is the degree of specialization of these dispositions, or equivalently what is the size of the relevant domains? Assuming that there are mental modules, how much of the mind, and which aspects of it, are domain-specific and modular?

Evolutionary Psychology is based on the idea that the mind is a set of special purpose thinking devices or modules whose domain-specific structure is an adaptation to ancestral environments. The modular view of the mind is an uncontroversial description of the periphery of the mind, the input-output sensorimotor and affective subsystems. The novelty of EP is the claim that higher order cognitive processes also exhibit a modular structure. Autism is a primary case study here, interpreted as a developmental failure of a module devoted to social intelligence or Theory of Mind. In this article I reappraise the arguments for innate modularity of TOM and argue that they fail. TOM ability is a consequence of domain general development scaffolded by early, innately specified, sensorimotor abilities. The alleged Modularity of TOM results from interpreting the outcome of developmental failures characteristic of autism at too high a level of cognitive abstraction.

Cognitive versatility

The concept of modularity is used to express the division of the computational resources of the mind into several mental expertise systems. This idea gained major importance within the emerging field of social neuroscience Cacioppo et al. By establishing the importance of a limited number of principles inherent to the brain, this concept of modularity represents a reaction to the relativist tradition that dominated studies of social phenomena during twentieth century, which strongly emphasized cross-cultural differences in social behavior and its irreducibility to biological frameworks for a discussion: Hirschfeld and Gelman, Conversely, the perspective that group cohesion relies on specific, semi-automatic types of cognition, which embody unique responses to selective pressures that lead to the differentiation of brain circuits specialized for those demands Cosmides, greatly expands the field of cognitive sciences, and that is one of the main reasons why it became so prominent. Among the social cognitive processes that define this expertise system, the most prominent are Theory-of-Mind Baron-Cohen, , sensitivity to fairness Barkow et al. The authors hypothesized that this trend was related to an evolutionary predisposition to fear out-group members, in accordance with the argument that race bias activates subcortical systems that are similar to the ones activated by fear learning.

The theory of mind module in evolutionary psychology

Organisms inherit a set of environmental regularities as well as genes, and these two inheritances repeatedly encounter each other across generations. This repetition drives natural selection to coordinate the interplay of stably replicated genes with stably persisting environmental regularities, so that this web of interactions produces the reliable development of a functionally organized design. Entropy is the enemy of organization. Selection is the only known counterweight to the tendency of physical systems to lose rather than grow functional organization. This means that the individually unique and unpredictable factors in the web of developmental interactions are a disordering threat to normal development.

Jerry Fodor divides the mind into peripheral, domain-specific modules and a domaingeneral faculty of central cognition. John Tooby and Lisa Cosmides argue instead that the mind is modular all the way through; cognition consists of a multitude of domain-specific processes. But human thought has a flexible, innovative character that contrasts with the inflexible, stereotyped performances of modular systems. My goal is to discover how minds that are constructed on modular principles might come to exhibit cognitive versatility.
