History of timekeeping devices

After observing the natural rhythm of daylight and dark, civilisations around the world looked for ways to measure time, first with calendars then with instruments of increasing precision. Clocks with weights, gears and regulators inspired devices, most often with no dial, that struck the important moments of community life. In China, some , craftsmen were employed in the manufacture of luxurious porcelain, textiles and metalwork for the Emperor. The dominant style in Central American arts and crafts was Mixteca-Puebla, with its colourful, geometric patterns. Giotto - began painting the frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, which he completed in

A clock is a device used to measure, keep, and indicate time. The clock is one of the oldest human inventions , meeting the need to measure intervals of time shorter than the natural units: the day , the lunar month , and the year. Devices operating on several physical processes have been used over the millennia. Some predecessors to the modern clock may be considered as "clocks" that are based on movement in nature: A sundial shows the time by displaying the position of a shadow on a flat surface. There is a range of duration timers, a well-known example being the hourglass.

Clock , mechanical or electrical device other than a watch for displaying time. A clock is a machine in which a device that performs regular movements in equal intervals of time is linked to a counting mechanism that records the number of movements. All clocks, of whatever form, are made on this principle. See also atomic clock ; nuclear clock. The origin of the all-mechanical escapement clock is unknown; the first such devices may have been invented and used in monasteries to toll a bell that called the monks to prayers. The first mechanical clocks to which clear references exist were large, weight-driven machines fitted into towers and known today as turret clocks. These early devices struck only the hours and did not have hands or a dial.

Although now over six hundred years old, mechanical watches and clocks are still popular luxury items that fascinate many people around the world. However few have examined the theory of how they work as presented in this book. The illustrations and computer animations are unique and have never been published before. It will be of significant interest to researchers in mechanical engineering, watchmakers and clockmakers, as well as people who have an engineering background and are interested in mechanical watches and clocks.

Un punqui. - Si. Punqui. -

Mean-time clocks, though, can be regulated by the stars with greater facility than by the sun, for the motion of the earth with regard to the fixed stars is uniform.
