Growing Cooler The Evidence On Urban Development And Climate Change Pdf
File Name: growing cooler the evidence on urban development and climate change .zip
This chapter outlines the general impacts and direct consequences climate change is likely to have on urban areas in Europe and how nature-based solutions NBS could increase our adaptive capacity and reduce the negative effects of a changing climate. The focus is on urban temperatures while we will also include effects on hydrological, ecological and social factors.

Transport Beyond Oil pp Cite as. A growing number of communities around the United States are seeking to increase the rates of active transportation walking and cycling in order to help address oil dependence and provide the co-benefits of improved livability, decreased pollution, and enhanced public-health outcomes. While rates of walking and cycling appear to be increasing across the country, 1 precise, causal data on the relationship between environmental interventions designed to spur active transportation use and walking and cycling rates are still being established. At a policy level, the need to test the impact of active transportation investments is at the core of the federally sponsored Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Program NTPP. These communities Minneapolis, Minnesota; Sheboygan, Wisconsin; Columbia, Missouri; and Marin County, California were selected to represent a diverse set of urban, rural, city, and county geographies across the nation.

At present, air conditioning AC is the most effective means for the cooling of indoor space. However, its increased global use is problematic for various reasons. This paper explores the challenges linked to increased AC use and discusses more sustainable alternatives. A literature review was conducted applying a transdisciplinary approach. It was further complemented by examples from cities in hot climates. To analyse the findings, an analytical framework was developed which considers four societal levels—individual, community, city, and national. The main challenges identified from the literature review are as follows: environmental, organisational, socio-economical, biophysical and behavioural.
Global Warming - Impacts and Future Perspective. Global warming and climate change refer to an increase in average global temperatures. Natural events and human activities are believed to be main contributors to such increases in average global temperatures. The climate change, caused by rising emissions of carbon dioxide from vehicles, factories and power stations, will not only effects the atmosphere and the sea but also will alter the geology of the Earth. Emissions of carbon dioxide due to our use of fossil energy will change the climate and the temperature is estimated to increase by 2 to 6 o Celsius within year , which is a tremendous increase from our current average temperature of 1. This may cause huge changes to our civilization, both positive and negative, but the total impact on our society is currently very uncertain.
This effect increases energy costs e. Climate change will likely lead to more frequent, more severe, and longer heat waves during summer months. See: degree-days figure JPG. City officials worry that intense summer heat could lead to uncomfortable conditions for residents, as well as reduced tourist attraction in summer months. This page contains technical information and references for state and local government officials working in the field of stormwater management.

Climate change definition pdf climate change definition pdf This report is an authoritative assessment of the science of climate change, with a focus on the United States. We measure the impact of climate change by the extent to which it could disrupt or destroy human life, as well as physical and natural capital. It may also be referred to as any significant change in measures of climate such as temperature, precipitation, or wind lasting for an extended Climate change includes both global warming driven by human emissions of greenhouse gases, and the resulting large-scale shifts in weather patterns.

Challenges of using air conditioning in an increasingly hot climate
The potential future effects of global climate change include more frequent wildfires, longer periods of drought in some regions and an increase in the number, duration and intensity of tropical storms. Global climate change has already had observable effects on the environment. Glaciers have shrunk, ice on rivers and lakes is breaking up earlier, plant and animal ranges have shifted and trees are flowering sooner. Effects that scientists had predicted in the past would result from global climate change are now occurring: loss of sea ice, accelerated sea level rise and longer, more intense heat waves.
Published Jul 16, Updated Jun 25, Increasingly destructive hurricanes are putting a growing number of people and structures at risk. For coastal communities, the social, economic, and physical scars left behind by major hurricanes are devastating. While hurricanes are a natural part of our climate system, recent research suggests that there has been an increase in intense hurricane activity in the North Atlantic since the s. In the future, there may not necessarily be more hurricanes, but there will likely be more intense hurricanes that carry higher wind speeds and more precipitation as a result of global warming.
Climate change mitigation consists of actions to limit global warming and its related effects. This involves reductions in human emissions of greenhouse gases GHGs as well as activities that reduce their concentrations in the atmosphere. Due to massive price drops, wind power and solar photovoltaics PV are increasingly out-competing oil, gas and coal though these require energy storage and improved electrical grids. Once that low-emission energy is deployed at large scale, transport and heating can shift to these mostly electric sources. Mitigation of climate change may also be achieved by changes in agriculture , reforestation and forest preservation and improved waste management.
