First, I will show that the hegemonic logic of Laclau appears logically constituted by the dynamic of capital as Postone studies it.

This logic reduces complexity and leads to an essentialist view of the social and to a closed, monistic type of theoretical discourse. For Geras, what Laclau and Mouffe see as the core of Marxism is simply a caricature, a systematic distortion of a theoretical tradition which, in the works of its most successful representatives, has managed to avoid reductionism and monistic closure without resorting to eclecticism or empiricism. This paper will attempt to develop three related arguments: a One can defend the Marxist paradigm against the idea of monistic closure not only by reference to the empirical work of specific authors, but also, or rather more appropriately, by looking at the logical status and mode of construction of certain fundamental Marxist concepts, such as the mode of production. Two points are therefore in order. I , lead eventually to the production of full-blown substantive theories Gen.

Hegemony and Socialist Strategy: Towards a Radical Democratic Politics

How can theories of hegemony advance our understanding of populism? We focus on populist articulatory practices as political interventions operating within a broader socio-symbolic as well as psycho-social terrain that both facilitates their formation and—at the same time—limits their scope. Finally, a series of empirical examples are used to illustrate the argument. Keywords: articulation , crisis , discourse , dislocation , hegemony , Gramsci , Laclau , Mouffe , populism.

This course engages with a particular body of socio-political theory which has been rather underexposed in organisation and management studies; that of the Argentinean political theorist, Ernesto Laclau. Laclau is most famous for his book Hegemony and Socialist Strategy co-authored with Chantal Mouffe , which could be regarded as one of the most i mp ortant post-Marxist texts written in the past twenty years. This course will closely read this book and the subsequent work of Laclau within the wider tradition of progressive socio-political theory while focussing on its i mp lications for the discourse of organisation and management studies OMS. On the other hand, the reading of Laclau also aims to be a critical praxis that evaluates the discourse of OMS politically. That is, the event of reading Laclau should be seen as part of a wider project of evaluating the political positioning of the OMS discourse and exploring the im-possibilities for its repositioning.

Since its original publication fifteen years ago, this hugely influential book has been at the centre of much debate. The arguments and controversies it has aroused are, furthermore, far from abating: the disintegration of the Soviet bloc, the emergence of new social and political identities linked to the transformation of late capitalism, and the crisis of a left-wing project whose essentialist underpinnings have increasingly come under fire have, if anything, made more relevant than ever the theoretical perspective that the book proposes.

Althusser contends that ideology has a material existence because "an ideology always exists in an apparatus, and its practice, or practices" Lenin Hegemony is thus reliant less on such repressive State apparatuses as the police than it is on those Ideological State Apparatuses ISAs by which ideology is inculcated in. The one that will be focused on in regard to media portrayal is hegemonic masculinity, a concept that came into popular perspective in the s and refers to a dominant.

The first two chapters deal with conceptual developments in the manner of an intellectual history , albeit with much more of an eye to disputation and intervention than traditional intellectual history employs. Chapter 2's discussion of Gramsci 's conception of cultural hegemony is followed by Chapter 3's more politicized development of Laclau and Mouffe's own arguments regarding hegemony's character and constitution. Finally, the fourth chapter argues for the relevance of hegemony as an analytic for the understanding and governance of contemporary politics, political engagement, and self-understanding on the Left. A new edition was published in , which included a preface by the authors in which they reaffirmed their commitment to the arguments made in
