Declaration of interest: Raphael Lemkin, who coined the term genocide , hired me as a teenager to write a chapter for his projected encyclopedia of genocide. Kiernan, an expert on the mass murders in Cambodia, covers much of the territory, from ancient Greece and Rome to modern Iraq, describing in sober prose the efforts of human beings to exterminate their fellows. Why do we do it? Farmers wipe out pastoral societies to obtain their land, supposing that agriculture equals civilization. Al-Qaeda still sees itself as refighting ancient battles.

Conflict can turn into genocide but not all conflicts have a genocidal outcome. At the theoretical level, Kiernan identifies four necessary ingredients in the making of a genocidal situation: the existence of political regimes that embrace cults of antiquity, an existing ethnic enmity, the presence of expansionist polities, and the pervasive influence of agrarian ideologies. Blend these four ingredients together in different configurations and you are likely to encounter an explosive circumstance. Not only does 'Blood and Soil' identify the ingredients; it also recognises the crucial processes that underpin their combination into an explosive mixture. Genocidal phenomena, Kiernan argues insightfully, are actually inherently contradictory occurrences where an anxious perception of a specific trend, or a series of developments, produces sustained counterpoint imaginings. Reality is going, or seems to be going one way, while the imagination proceeds in the opposite direction. It is out of this tension that a genocidal impulse is born: "Over the centuries, these strange social landscapes — hills of technological progress cut by ravines of ideological reaction — are littered with apparently contradictory signposts that nevertheless help trace the historical path to genocide.

This grim account of history notes remarkable parallels in the patterns of mass slaughter, from Carthage to Darfur. With references to the genocides sanctioned by the Bible, it's ghastly reading. Yet you also can't help feeling a measure of progress over the centuries. Today, we're still far too passive about stopping genocide, but even those leaders who engage in it tend to be embarrassed, rather than boastful. The author's perspective is global and he is interested in genocide before the twentieth century.

Those who appreciate well-written sourcebooks containing narratives of vicious violence unencumbered by analysis will applaud the one-stop emporium of cases that the book provides. Kiernan musters his many cases in support of the claim that four themes recur in mass killing across human history: cults of antiquity, fetishes in favor of agriculture therefore in opposition to nonagriculturalists , ethnic enmity which the book expands to include racial and religious hostility , and territorial expansion by the perpetrators. This is universalizing history.
