It is difficult to believe that over a decade has passed since we first sat down over dinner in Paris with our friends and mentors, Alan Redfern and Martin Hunter, to begin a generational transfer of their seminal work on international arbitration. How could we honour the tradition of a work known for its style and synthesis without extending its length in a world where arbitration was in a process of normalisation and relevant sources, jurisdic- tions, and laws were multiplying by the day. That challenge was all the greater as we were tasked with making the work even more international. But as students of the book ourselves, we understood that the genius of Redfern and Hunter was its status as an elegantly written, easily comprehensible synthesis of arbitration law and practice. It was not intended to be an exhaustive encyclopaedia of arbitral sources or precedents.

And the heart of the arbitral process, despite many attacks, remains as true today as it was in when the first edition was published: an independent dispute resolution process to assist international business and states in which private individuals selected by the parties would hear their disputes and render a binding decision enforceable throughout the world.

Redfern and Hunter on international arbitration

The contributors offer insights and advice on the way in which international arbitrations are carried out from the point of view of arbitrators reading pleadings and memorials and listening to witnesses and hearing arguments. The authors' discussions are intended to be thoughtful, insightful and useful - and perhaps, occasionally, iconoclastic. As a result, there may be instances in which the authors disagree with one another on certain points. This is to be expected for there are often many routes that can be taken to achieve a result. Perspectives on International Arbitration. Davidson and David Plant. Chapter 5 Confidentiality Michael Pryles.

Suresh Birdi, Visiting Lecturer, Birmingham City University This book is a very useful tool when educating about international arbitration in the generic sense. It contains substantial coverage on key aspects from the arbitral agreement to the binding resolution. This book successfully introduces all of the areas of international arbitration. The detail and depth the book goes into makes it a must read for all students attempting to study any form of arbitration whether it is investment or international commercial arbitration. The only weakness of the book is that it could dive deeper into the different dimensions as outlined earlier and it could differentiate between the dynamics of investment and international commercial arbitration. Nigel acts as counsel and arbitrator with a particular focus on Latin America. He is an occasional postgraduate lecturer in arbitration at the University of Paris I - Sorbonne.
