Introduction to Sociology and Anthropology

Cultural anthropology is a branch of anthropology focused on the study of cultural variation among humans. It is in contrast to social anthropology , which perceives cultural variation as a subset of a posited anthropological constant. The umbrella term sociocultural anthropology includes both cultural and social anthropology traditions. Anthropologists have pointed out that through culture people can adapt to their environment in non-genetic ways, so people living in different environments will often have different cultures. Cultural anthropology has a rich methodology , including participant observation often called fieldwork because it requires the anthropologist spending an extended period of time at the research location , interviews , and surveys. The rubric cultural anthropology is generally applied to ethnographic works that are holistic in approach, oriented to the ways in which culture affects individual experience, or aim to provide a rounded view of the knowledge, customs, and institutions of a people. Social anthropology is a term applied to ethnographic works that attempt to isolate a particular system of social relations such as those that comprise domestic life, economy, law, politics, or religion, give analytical priority to the organizational bases of social life, and attend to cultural phenomena as somewhat secondary to the main issues of social scientific inquiry.

Cultural Anthropology publishes ethnographic writing informed by a wide array of theoretical perspectives, innovative in form and content, and focused on both traditional and emerging topics. It also welcomes essays concerned with ethnographic methods and research design in historical perspective, and with ways cultural analysis can address broader public audiences and interests. This issue, the first of , features six original research essays on a diverse array of themes. Gustav Peebles uses the example of electronic payments in Sweden—particularly the Swish cell phone app that is a pervasive e-currency—to demonstrate how these raise much broader questions of sovereignty and citizenship. His contribution to the anthropology of banking and finance offers an intriguing assessment of the potential and limits of such novel forms of money. Kevin P. Donovan reads the historical evidence from a transnational black market in coffee—or magendo— along the Kenyan and Ugandan border through the lens of an anthropology of social reproduction.

Ollantaytambo, Peruvian Andes. Photograph by Amy Roe, This course introduces socio-cultural anthropology, the comparative study of the life-ways of non-literate and peasant cultures, as well as literate sub-cultural societies, via long-term participant-observation in different ecological settings around the world. All major aspects of the culture of these peoples and ethnic groups will be examined including: technology, subsistence, economics, social organization, the arts and ideology. An effort will be made to articulate the study of the cognition and behavior of living humans ethnography and ethnology with the other three traditional sub-disciplines of anthropology: archaeology the study of past societies via their material culture , physical anthropology the study of the paleontology, physical adaptations and primate relatives of humans and linguistics the comparative study of all known human languages. I think society teaches the youth to be afraid to find out who they are. We as society need to embrace our legacy, not hide it.

Thus, two important aspects of social/cultural anthropology are ethnography and ethnology. The former is more of empirical study or description of the culture and.

Introduction to Sociocultural Anthropology

Identify the four subfields of anthropology and describe the kinds of research projects associated with each subfield. Describe how anthropology developed from early explorations of the world through the professionalization of the discipline in the 19th century. Discuss ethnocentrism and the role it played in early attempts to understand other cultures. Explain how the perspectives of holism, cultural relativism, comparison, and fieldwork, as well as both scientific and humanistic tendencies make anthropology a unique discipline.

Social and Cultural Anthropology: A Very Short Introduction

There is no hard-and-fast distinction between them, although there are differences of emphasis.

WHAT IS ANTHROPOLOGY?

Американец по кличке Северная Дакота должен был бы уже позвонить. Нуматака начал слегка нервничать. Он очень надеялся, что ничего не сорвалось.
