Patients with certain underlying comorbidities are at a higher risk of progressing to severe COVID These comorbidities include being 65 years or older; having cardiovascular disease, chronic lung disease, sickle cell disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity, or chronic kidney disease; being pregnant; being a smoker; and being a recipient of transplant or immunosuppressive therapy. Initial evaluation for these patients may include chest X-ray, ultrasound, or, if indicated, computerized tomography. An electrocardiogram should be performed if indicated. Laboratory testing includes a complete blood count with differential and a metabolic profile, including liver and renal function tests.
Eradication of Diseases
National TB treatment guidelines strongly recommend using a patient-centered case management approach - including directly observed therapy "DOT" - when treating persons with active TB disease. DOT means that a trained health care worker or other designated individual excluding a family member provides the prescribed TB drugs and watches the patient swallow every dose.
