Arthur Schopenhauer was among the first 19 th century philosophers to contend that at its core, the universe is not a rational place. Inspired by Plato and Kant, both of whom regarded the world as being more amenable to reason, Schopenhauer developed their philosophies into an instinct-recognizing and ultimately ascetic outlook, emphasizing that in the face of a world filled with endless strife, we ought to minimize our natural desires for the sake of achieving a more tranquil frame of mind and a disposition towards universal beneficence. Often considered to be a thoroughgoing pessimist, Schopenhauer in fact advocated ways — via artistic, moral and ascetic forms of awareness — to overcome a frustration-filled and fundamentally painful human condition. Exactly a month younger than the English Romantic poet, Lord Byron — , who was born on January 22, , Arthur Schopenhauer came into the world on February 22, in Danzig [Gdansk, Poland] — a city that had a long history in international trade as a member of the Hanseatic League. In March , when Schopenhauer was five years old, his family moved to the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg after the formerly free city of Danzig was annexed by Prussia. Schopenhauer toured through Europe several times with his family as a youngster and young teenager, and lived in France —99 [ages ] and England [age 15], where he learned the languages of those countries. As he later reported, his experiences in France were among the happiest of his life.

The implicit suggestion is that there is a world that can be viewed, as it were, in two ways: either as will, or as representation; viewed from the latter perspective, idealism is true. However, as we hope to show, given Schopenhauer's elaborate metaphysics of the will and the role played by der Wille and der WiUe zum Leben in his philosophy, there are good reasons to ask and attempt to answer the question: Is Schopenhauer an idealist? We wish to take issue with the views espoused by Schopenhauer's most recent English-language commentators concerning his idealism. It will be our contention in this paper that while Schopenhauer's central questions and initial assumptions are closely tied to the controversies which culminated in the birth of post-Kantian idealism in the early decades of the nineteenth century, the answers arrived at in the metaphysics of the will take him far beyond the conceptual framework of idealism.

In , an abridged version was edited by Thomas Mann. In the summer of , Schopenhauer submitted his doctoral dissertation— On the Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason —and was awarded a doctorate from the University of Jena. After spending the following winter in Weimar , he lived in Dresden and published his treatise On Vision and Colours in Schopenhauer spent the next several years working on his chief work, The World as Will and Representation. Schopenhauer asserted that the work is meant to convey a "single thought"  from various perspectives.

Here there is nothing permanent but matter alone, and the recurrence of the same varied organic forms by means of certain ways and channels that inevitably exist as they do. All that empirical science can teach is only the more precise nature and rule of these events. But at last the philosophy of modem times, especially through Berkeley and Kant, has called to mind that all this in the first instance is only phenomenon of the brain, and is encumbered by so many great and different subjective conditions that its supposed absolute reality vanishes, and leaves room for an entirely different world-order that lies at the root of that phenomenon, in other words, is related to it as is the thing-in-itself to the mere appearance. The world is my representation is, like the axioms of Euclid, a proposition which everyone must recognize as true as soon as he understands it, although it is not a proposition that everyone understands as soon as he hears it.

Recognition came late in his life, however, starting only in with the publication of a review article by J. Schopenhauer held that the character of the will qua thing in itself—blind urge—expresses itself in the perpetual strivings of living creatures and in the forces of inorganic matter. Grounding his proto-Darwinian philosophy of nature in his metaphysics and the empirical sciences of his day, Schopenhauer viewed nature as an arena where living beings compete to survive and procreate, where species adapt to environmental conditions, and, most emphasized by Schopenhauer, where sentient beings suffer as virtual slaves to their will to life [ Wille zum Leben ]. This is a view that has seldom been defended in the history of Western thought and became a potent philosophical problem for Nietzsche and atheist existentialists. Mitigating his pessimism somewhat, Schopenhauer does see a salutary role for the intellect in human life.

This is the third volume of the projected six volume English-language edition of the collected works of Arthur Schopenhauer. The first volume was The Two Fundamental Problems of Ethics , and the second was the first volume of The World as Will and Representation , which was originally published in In Schopenhauer published a revised version of it, and added an entire second volume in the form of a commentary on the first, thus completing the magnum opus. It is this second volume, translated and edited by Judith Norman, Alastair Welchman, and series editor Christopher Janaway, which is here under review. Perhaps as a result of the discipline of translating Schopenhauer, the introduction is more lucid and useful than is often the case, identifying some of the major controversies and stumbling blocks with admirable precision. The translators again raise the question of the "single thought" xiii Schopenhauer claimed lay behind all of his philosophizing, and suggest that there is a clue in the four book division of both the first and second volumes, which prompts the reader to consider the will, then representation, then return to the will and again to representation. This process itself leads to a fuller grasp of the meaning of the often repeated insight that there is one world which ineluctably must appear to us as either will or representation.
