This chapter describes a rationale for selecting a low-risk UAV Unmanned Aerial Vehicle configuration and a methodology for sizing and optimizing the shape of both fueled and electric-powered aircraft. Three examples are given of low-risk UAV configurations. These are shown to be essentially similar from the point of view of optimization and sizing. The sizing methodology for fueled aircraft is described in detail, and a similar one for electric-powered aircraft is described to the extent that it differs from that for fueled aircraft.

At first glance most developed UASs are applicable to both military and civilian deployment. These roles have expanded far beyond the DDD boundary. Civilian uses require operations in open airspace, rather than on a battlefield or within a military enclosure. Regulating authorities have not yet accepted their general operation. The FAA regulations regarding UAS seem to center on preventing injury to persons and damage to property due to failures of the UAS and preventing injury or damage caused by collisions between UAS and other airborne vehicles.
In addition, Austin has over 40 years' experience in the design and development of UAS. One of Austin's programmes, the "Sprite UAV System" has been deployed.

An unmanned aerial vehicle UAV or uncrewed aerial vehicle ,  commonly known as a drone is an aircraft without a human pilot on board. UAVs are a component of an unmanned aircraft system UAS , which include a UAV, a ground-based controller, and a system of communications between the two. Compared to crewed aircraft, UAVs were originally used for missions too "dull, dirty or dangerous"  for humans. While drones originated mostly in military applications, their use is rapidly finding many more applications including aerial photography , product deliveries , agriculture , policing and surveillance, infrastructure inspections, science,     smuggling,  and drone racing.
