This article is concerned with social and political equality.

Since oppression often involves ignoring the perspectives of the marginalized, different approaches to feminist ethics have in common a commitment to better understand the experiences of persons oppressed in gendered ways. That commitment results in a tendency, in feminist ethics, to take into account empirical information and material actualities. Not all feminist ethicists correct all of 1 through 3. Some have assumed or upheld the gender binary Wollstonecraft ; Firestone

A business is a productive organization—an organization whose purpose is to create goods and services for sale, usually at a profit. Business is also an activity. One entity e. Business ethics can thus be understood as the study of the ethical dimensions of productive organizations and commercial activities. Questions in business ethics are important and relevant to everyone. Moreover, many of us spend a major portion of our lives engaged in, or preparing to engage in, productive activity, on our own or as part of productive organizations.

There are several well-respected ways of looking at ethical issues. Some of them have been around for centuries. It is important to know that many who think a lot about business and ethics have deeply held beliefs about which perspective is best. Others would recommend considering ethical problems from a variety of different perspectives. Here, we take a brief look at 1 utilitarianism, 2 deontology, 3 social justice and social contract theory, and 4 virtue theory. Jeremy Bentham is often considered the founder of utilitarianism, though John Stuart Mill who wrote On Liberty and Utilitarianism and others promoted it as a guide to what is good. Utilitarianism emphasizes not rules but results.

Why Economists Should Take Ethics Seriously

Bentham defined as the "fundamental axiom " of his philosophy the principle that "it is the greatest happiness of the greatest number that is the measure of right and wrong. He advocated individual and economic freedoms , the separation of church and state , freedom of expression , equal rights for women, the right to divorce, and in an unpublished essay the decriminalising of homosexual acts. Bentham's students included his secretary and collaborator James Mill , the latter's son, John Stuart Mill , the legal philosopher John Austin , American writer and activist John Neal , as well as Robert Owen , one of the founders of utopian socialism. He "had considerable influence on the reform of prisons, schools, poor laws, law courts, and Parliament itself. On his death in , Bentham left instructions for his body to be first dissected, and then to be permanently preserved as an "auto-icon" or self-image , which would be his memorial. Because of his arguments in favour of the general availability of education, he has been described as the "spiritual founder" of UCL. However, he played only a limited direct part in its foundation.

The words "moral" and "ethics" and cognates are often used interchangeably. However, it is useful to make the following distinction:. A theory is a structured set of statements used to explain or predict a set of facts or concepts. Seen in this light, it becomes clear that we cannot draw a sharp divide between moral theory and applied ethics e. For instance, in order to critically evaluate the moral issue of affirmative action, we must not attempt to evaluate what actions or policies are right or wrong independent of what we take to determine right and wrong conduct. You will see, as we proceed, that we do not do ethics without at least some moral theory.

With the recent boom in business ethics comes a curious irony: the more entrenched the discipline becomes in business schools, the more bewildering—and even off-putting—it appears to actual managers.
