The intellectual crisis of the West was also due to the emergence of the purported distinction between facts and values which underlay the movement of social science positivism in the universities, the locus of the intellectual ideas that underpinned an entire civilization. Is there any foundation in reality for the distinction between right and wrong in ethics and politics, or must we be forced to solemnly embrace and learn to survive with the nihilism which was the ultimate conclusion any thinking person would be led to after embracing historicism, and also positivism, both of which logically paved the way for value relativism and the resulting nihilism? At the same time that Strauss identified the link between relativism and the rise of Hitler in the twentieth century, he also cautioned against the logical fallacy of argumentum ad Hitlerum , a modern version of the logical fallacy of argumentum ad hominum. In essence, Strauss contended that one is not justified in rejecting a philosophical contention or position simply because this contention or position was adhered to by Hitler or other Nazis.

The six lectures, written while Strauss was at the New School, and a full transcript of the Walgreen Lectures show Strauss working toward the ideas he would present in fully matured form in his landmark work. In them, he explores natural right and the relationship between modern philosophers and the thought of the ancient Greek philosophers, as well as the relation of political philosophy to contemporary political science and to major political and historical events, especially the Holocaust and World War II. Don't have an account? The Lockean form of modernity was generally more attractive than the Machiavellian and far more successful. Locke appealed to what seemed a version of traditional natural law and cast his argument in many places in theistic terms. In Natural Right and History Strauss argued that this appearance was mostly a clever subterfuge. The materialist account also strengthens the case against the Aristotelian-Thomistic view of man as a rational and social animal naturally suited by language and friendship to live in a political community. Let us turn to Hobbes for an answer to this puzzle, and, in so doing, uncover the sources of our modern conceptions of law, rights, and justice. Systems—subject, political, and private Chapter

If nothing else, Strauss and the Thomists were natural allies because they shared the same modern enemies: namely, historicism the view that all human thought is confined to the immediate historical horizon of the thinker and positivism the view that human thought cannot make value judgments, but only judgments about observable matters of fact.
