Sustainable fashion is a movement and process of fostering change to fashion products and the fashion system towards greater ecological integrity and social justice. Sustainable fashion concerns more than just addressing fashion textiles or products. It comprises addressing the whole system of fashion. This means dealing with interdependent social, cultural, ecological, and financial systems. Sustainable fashion also deals with considering fashion from the perspective of many stakeholders - users and producers, all living species, contemporary and future dwellers on earth. Sustainable fashion, therefore, is the responsibility of citizens, the public sector, and the private sector. A key example of the need for systems thinking [2] in fashion is that the benefits of product-level initiatives, such as replacing one fiber type for a less environmentally harmful [3] option.

Sustainable Fashion and Textiles: Design Journeys

Published first in and as a fully revised Second Edition in with new content and a new geometric pattern cover. Sustainable Fashion and Textiles: Design Journeys brings together for the first time information about lifecycle sustainability impacts of fashion and textiles, practical alternatives, design concepts and social innovation. It challenges existing ideas about the scope and potential of sustainability issues in fashion and textiles, and sets out a more pluralistic, engaging and forward-looking picture, drawing on ideas of systems thinking, human needs, local products, slow fashion and participatory design, as well as knowledge of materials. The book not only defines the field, it also challenges it, and uses design ideas to help shape more sustainable products and promote social change. The remaining four chapters explore design approaches for altering the scale and nature of consumption, including service design, localism, speed and user involvement.

Ethical fashion, eco fashion and sustainable fashion: all these terms have become familiar within the media over the last few years. These issues have moved from being the preserve of niche fashion markets to centre stage for the consumer, with high street giants such as Marks and Spencer launching their Plan A campaign in Higher education has followed suit, with the development of new courses including the MA Fashion and the Environment launched by London College of Fashion as part of their Centre for Sustainable Fashion. Although there has been a growing level of demand from fashion and textile students and staff, resources relating to sustainability and ethics have, however, been limited for this subject area. This book explores the 'craft of use', the cultivated, ordinary and ingenious ideas and practices that promote satisfying and resourceful use of garments, presenting them as an alternative, dynamic, experiential frame with which to articulate and foster sustainability in the fashion sector. Here Kate Fletcher provides a broad imagining of sustainability in fashion that gives attention to tending and wearing garments, and favours their use as much as their creation. She offers a diversified view of fashion beyond the market and the market's purpose and reveals fashion provision and expression in a world not dependent on continuous consumption. Framing design and use as a single whole, the book uncovers a more contingent and time-dependent role for design in sustainability, recognising that garments, while sold as a product, are lived as a process. Drawing from stories and portrait photography that document the ways in which members of the public from across three continents use their clothes, and the work of seven international design teams seeking to amplify these use practices, Craft of Use presents a changed social narrative for fashion, borne out of ideas of satisfaction and interdependence, of action, knowledge and human agency, that glimpses fashion post-growth.
