The effect of trauma on the brain development of children
This practice paper provides an overview of what we know from research about cognitive development in children who have experienced trauma, 1 and provides principles to support effective practice responses to those children's trauma. Trauma is thought to have significant implications for the development of children's cognition, 2 language and self-identity: this paper will provide an overview of the state of the evidence that links trauma with delayed or disrupted cognitive development. While children in care are likely to have been exposed to trauma, they are also likely to have been exposed to a range of other factors that may impact their cognitive development. Early-life adversities for these children may include exposure to alcohol and other substances in utero, and neglect. The potential impact of all these factors must be considered in developing supports for children in care.
It can also be treated. All children in foster care have been exposed to some form of trauma. The very act of being put in foster care is traumatic for children, because it means the loss of their birth family and often friends, schoolmates, teachers, and everything that is familiar. But many children in foster care have experienced more than one form of trauma or repeated trauma, the lasting effects of which should be acknowledged and understood by families considering foster care and adoption. Child traumatic stress occurs when children and adolescents are exposed to events or situations that overwhelm their ability to cope and interfere with daily life and their ability to function and interact with others. The type of trauma experienced by children in foster care can vary widely from neglect to domestic violence to physical and sexual abuse. Approximately one in four children in foster care will show signs of post-traumatic stress disorder.
More than two thirds of children reported at least 1 traumatic event by age Potentially traumatic events include:. Each year, the number of youth requiring hospital treatment for physical assault-related injuries would fill every seat in 9 stadiums. The signs of traumatic stress may be different in each child. Young children may react differently than older children.

Presenting an integrative model for treating traumatized children, this book combines play, art, and other expressive therapies with ideas and strategies drawn from cognitive-behavioral and family therapy. Eliana Gil demonstrates how to tailor treatment to the needs of each child by using both directive and nondirective approaches. Throughout, practical clinical examples illustrate ways to target trauma-related symptomatology while also helping children process painful feelings and memories that are difficult to verbalize. The book concludes with four in-depth cases that bring to life the unique situation of each child and family, the decision-making process of the therapist, and the applications of developmentally informed, creative, and flexible interventions. What is trauma?
