Internet access in Australia is increasing with the most popular online activity reported by Australians being social media use. The literature is divided as to whether social media use is helpful or harmful to intimate relationships. Recent research from an Australian family counselling provider indicates that social media use is resulting in negative intimate relationship outcomes, echoing recent American research findings. However, other researchers note that social media use can have positive outcomes for intimate relationships and individuals. These different findings prompted this research which focuses on the impact of social media usage on intimate relationships using Facebook as a case study. A survey of Australians examining Facebook usage, relationship satisfaction and household income was undertaken. The results suggest that relationship satisfaction varies based on types of social media usage when controlled for household income.
Abstract Social networking sites SNS offer various opportunities for communicating personal information, thus providing an ideal setting for getting in contact with other users. An analysis of online profiles showed that singles disclosed more photographs of themselves on their profiles than people in relationships. The highest numbers of friends and wall postings were shown by people who did not reveal their relationship status. Singles displayed more groups on their profile and were more likely to join user groups dealing with parties, sexual statements as well as fun and nonsense. Results therefore indicate that — although SNS are not especially dedicated to dating behavior — self-presentation is nevertheless affected by the potential to form romantic relationships. Therefore, relationship status is suggested as a further factor which affects online impression management, besides, for example, socio-demographic aspects, personality traits and culture. Keywords: social networking sites; self-presentation; impression management; need to belong.

Broadly defined, social relationships refer to the connections that exist between people who have recurring interactions that are perceived by the participants to have personal meaning. This definition includes relationships between family members, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and other associates but excludes social contacts and interactions that are fleeting, incidental, or perceived to have limited significance e. Relationship phenomena of interest to scientists encompass both the specific interactions that individuals experience with members of their social networks and the global perceptions of those interactions, which are shaped by past and current interactions with important social network members. The interactions that occur with social network members are often positive, and include the provision of emotional and material support, companionship, and encouragement of health-enhancing behaviors. Interactions with social network members also can be negative, however, and can include insensitive, unresponsive, hurtful, or intrusive actions by others. A large body of evidence suggests that social relationships are associated with health. People with fewer social network ties have been found to have an elevated risk for a number of diseases, including cardiovascular disease and stroke, some forms of cancer, infectious disease, and possibly dementia Cohen, ; Uchino,
