Many thanks to all who have been helping out at the Scrub and Spud events this year. Don’t worry, there are still two dates left to go in 2012 and more to follow in the New Year, see details at the bottom to book on!
So far we have been treated to some awe inspiring backdrops. From some seriously big surf at Lundy and Epphaven to aerial displays from buzzards at Porthcothan. In general we have been very lucky with stunningly clear, beautiful days bar one very impressive 10 minute hail storm at Porthcothan. Not to mind, we could see it coming in from the sea, sheltered behind the 4×4 and carried on after it had passed!
Opening up areas of scrub is easier said than done and requires a lot of cutting, sawing, raking and burning. When the bonfire has baked our potatoes to perfection a rest and a hearty lunch is very much deserved!
The volunteers have offered much needed extra pairs of hands to help us give the stunning wild flowers and grasses a chance to thrive. Cutting back the gorse and blackthorn provides a greater variety of habitat, food, hunting and nesting ground which in turn supports all the insects, birds and mammals dependent on them. But don’t worry about the stonechats and other animals who depend on the scrub; there is still plenty of gorse left for them!
It is really great that we have been able to open up these areas and we simply could not do it without help. Thanks again for all the hard work from volunteers and don’t forget to visit in the spring to see the fruits of our labour!
If you want to join in next month give us a ring on 01208 863821 to book your free potato and for further details. Join us from 10am until 4pm, we provide all the gloves, tools and equipment. All you need to bring is old clothing suitable for thorny work outdoors and any extra fillings you want for jacket potatoes.
